Ignacio Casal got his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Immunology in the Biological Research Center (CSIC-UAM). Then, he did his post-doc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Back to Spain, his work was related to the production of diagnostics and vaccines for viral diseases. In 2001, he joined the CNIO as Director of the Biotechnology Programme and Head of the Protein Technology Unit. More recently, in 2007, he got a position of senior investigator at the Biological Research Center from the CSIC, where he is the Head of the Functional Proteomics Laboratory. His current research interest focuses mainly on the search and validation of new biomarkers in colorectal cancer by applying proteomic strategies, like 2D-DIGE electrophoresis, quantitative mass spectrometry (SILAC, iTRAQ, etc) and protein microarrays. Ignacio Casal has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and 20 monographies and book chapters. He is also co-inventor of 15 patents.
