Jos Jonkers performed his Ph.D. research (thesis: Identification and characterization of the Frat1 proto-oncogene, University of Amsterdam) and postdoctoral research in the group of Anton Berns at the NKI. In 2002, he visited the lab of Allan Bradley at the Sanger Institute to develop platforms for mouse array-CGH. He became an assistant professor at the NKI in 2003 and a permanent staff member in 2008.

In 2012 he was elected to EMBO membership and appointed as Head of Molecular Pathology at the NKI. His lab specializes in the genetic dissection of human BRCA-associated hereditary breast cancer and E-cadherin mutated invasive lobular breast cancer through the use of genetically engineered mouse models and patient-derived xenograft models, which are used for both basic and translational studies.
