Prof. Jorge Sierra was born in Barcelona, Spain, and graduated in Medicine and Surgery with honorsin 1979. Dr. Sierra trained in Hematology at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona (Prof. Ciril Rozman and Prof. Emili Montserrat) between 1980 and 1983, obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Barcelona with the qualification of “summa cum laude”. In 1985, Dr. Sierrabecame staff member at the Hematology Department of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and during 1995 and 1996 was a “Visiting Scientist” at the Unrelated Donor Transplant Program(Prof. Claudio Anasetti) of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, USA.
Since 1997, Dr. Sierra is the Director of the Hematology Division and Hematopoietic Transplantation Program at the Hospital de la Santa Creu I Sant Pau in Barcelona. Dr. Sierraserved as Vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona where he became a full Professor of Medicine in 2006. Dr. Sierra is a member of the Board of theJose Carreras International Leukemia Foundation and up to 2010 was also part of the Advisory Board of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), an organization in which he also served as Co-Chair of the Acute Leukemia Committee during four years. Dr. Sierra is President of the Spanish CETLAM group for the study of AML and Scientific Director of the Blood and Tissue Bank of Catalonia. Since 2008, Dr. Sierra is serving as a member of the Board of the European Haematology Association.
