Joost C. Meijers BSc, MSc, PhD

Dr. J.C.M. Meijers (1960) has been named Professor of Experimental Vascular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA).

Joost Meijers' research focuses on the mechanisms responsible for bleeding, and venous and arterial thrombosis. He studies the process of blood coagulation in order to gain insight into thrombosis risk factors and to identify targets for improved therapies. He is currently investigating the significance of interactions between coagulation and, amongst other conditions, fibrinolysis (the process whereby a blood clot is gradually broken down), cancer, and infection. He also develops diagnostic methods for the risk stratification of patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Meijers has served as the head of the Department of Experimental Vascular Medicine at the AMC since 1999 and has been a Senior University Lecturer since 2005. Previously he held successive positions as Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) Fellow, University Lecturer, and Senior University Lecturer in the Haematology Department of Utrecht University.
