Jonathan E. Charnin MD

Jonathan E. Charnin, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and a consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist and critical care specialist with expertise in perioperative care, critical care medicine, airway management, and anesthesia education.

Dr. Charnin earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan Medical School after graduating magna cum laude from Hope College with a degree in Chemistry and Biology. He completed an internship and junior residency in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, followed by residency training in Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was selected to serve as Chief Resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Before joining Mayo Clinic in 2016, Dr. Charnin held several educational leadership positions at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, including Director of Education, Clerkship Director, and Recruitment Chair. He has built a distinguished career as a clinician-educator, earning numerous honors for teaching excellence, including the Dr. Henry K. Beecher Clinical Teacher Award, Best Clinical Instructor in Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, and multiple Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year and Distinguished Educator awards.

Dr. Charnin's clinical and research interests focus on airway management, critical care medicine education, perioperative infection prevention, patient safety, and healthcare quality improvement. His scholarly work includes investigations into anesthesia workspace contamination, infection control practices, point-of-care ultrasound, critical care outcomes, and evidence-based approaches to medical education.
