Dr. Jonathan Wesley Riess, MD, MS, is a medical oncologist specializing in thoracic malignancies and head and neck cancers. He serves as Director of Thoracic Oncology and Associate Professor of Medicine at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento.
Dr. Riess’s clinical expertise focuses on lung cancer and other thoracic cancers, including mesothelioma and thymoma, as well as head and neck cancers. He is actively involved in national guideline development through his role on the Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and related malignancies panel for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
His research centers on advancing cancer care through novel diagnostics, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies, particularly in lung cancer. He has played a key role in clinical trials and translational research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with thoracic malignancies.
Dr. Riess earned his BA in psychobiology from Swarthmore College, his MD from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a Master of Science in epidemiology and clinical research from Stanford University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and fellowship training in hematology/oncology at Stanford.
