Jonathan Carter MD

Dr. Jonathan L. Carter is an internationally recognized neurologist, neuroimmunology specialist, and clinical researcher at the Mayo Clinic Research Faculty Profile in Phoenix, Arizona. He serves as Associate Professor of Neurology and Consultant in the Department of Neurology, where he focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and research of multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), optic neuritis, and other autoimmune neurological conditions.

Dr. Carter earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, summa cum laude, from the University of California, San Diego, followed by his Doctor of Medicine degree from Mayo Medical School. He completed an internship in internal medicine at New England Deaconess Hospital, a neurology residency through the Longwood Area Neurology Training Program at Harvard Medical School, and advanced fellowship training at the Multiple Sclerosis Center for Neurological Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

His research is centered on advancing therapies for multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunologic disorders. Dr. Carter has participated in numerous clinical trials that contributed to the approval of many disease-modifying therapies currently used in MS care. His work also investigates diagnostic errors and disease mimics of MS, treatment strategies for MOGAD and neuromyelitis optica, and therapies designed to reduce symptom burden and improve quality of life for patients with autoimmune neurological diseases.

Beyond research, Dr. Carter has played a major role in medical education and academic leadership at Mayo Clinic. He has served as Fellowship Director for the Multiple Sclerosis/Neuroimmunology Fellowship, Associate Program Director of the Neurology Residency Program, Associate Dean of Mayo Medical School, and Chair of several educational and residency committees. His dedication to teaching has earned prestigious honors including the Distinguished Educator Award and Faculty Service Award from Mayo Clinic.

A board-certified neurologist and diplomate of the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, Dr. Carter has remained actively involved with leading professional organizations, including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Through his clinical expertise, groundbreaking research, and commitment to education, he continues to be a respected leader in the field of neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis care.
