Jonathan J. Rome MD, FACC

Jonathan Rome, MD, is Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs for the Division of Cardiology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and professor of pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds the Distinguished Chairs in the Department of Pediatrics. Since 1994, Dr. Rome has been the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory and interventional cardiology at CHOP. He is also the medical director of the Cardiac Procedure and Recovery Unit, one of three cardiac units at CHOP. “Interventional cardiology” means the use of catheters to place stents, replacement valves and other devices to treat heart problems. Dr. Rome is a national leader and has trained numerous fellows in this highly specialized field, which holds great promise as a less invasive alternative to open heart surgery.

Dr. Rome has published numerous articles in journals such as Pediatrics, Cardiology in the Young, Congenital Heart Disease and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He is a reviewer (helping to decide which articles are published) for 10 journals, including Pediatric Cardiology, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Circulation. Dr. Rome has authored numerous chapters in textbooks used by medical students and practicing physicians. He has lectured around the country and the world on using catheterization to evaluate and treat heart defects in fetuses, infants and children, and on other topics such as the causes and treatment of stenotic and hypoplastic (narrow and malformed) pulmonary arteries and the use of 3-D imaging during catheterization.
