Dr Ball initially trained as a physician and gained broad experience including general medicine cardiology respiratory medicine infectious diseases and renal medicine. He then undertook training in intensive care medicine at St George's Hospital in 1988 and completed a retrospectively recognised advanced training course which included anaesthesia and research as well as completing an MSc and MD thesis during this period.
After completing his training Dr Ball undertook a one year intensive care medicine fellowship at Liverpool Hospital Australia level 1 trauma centre and regional neuro and cardiothoracic centre. He then undertook a six month post on the Auckland Air Ambulance in New Zealand. Dr Ball has an active involvement in research, post-graduate speciality training and the management of the potential organ donor and the London Trauma System.
Dr Ball is a consultant in intensive care medicine at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His clinical interests include: tracheostomy, advanced respiratory support, echocardiology, renal replacement therapy, electroencephalography and polytrauma.
Dr Ball works on both the general and neuro intensive care units at St George's Hospital. He is an honorary senior lecturer in intensive care medicine at St George's University of London. He is the current Care Group Lead for General Intensive Care Unit and is the Directorate Lead for IT.
