Dr. Jonathan A. Bernstein is a Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Immunology/Allergy Section at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and partner of the Bernstein Allergy Group and Clinical Research Center. He received his MD from the University of Cincinnati College Of Medicine in 1985. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital from 1985-1988 and his Allergy/Clinical Immunology training at Northwestern University from 1988-1990.

His current research involves the health effects of environmental interventions in the homes of asthmatic children funded by NIAID, novel therapies for the treatment of angioedema/chronic urticaria, biomarkers and mechanisms of HAE, immunosurveillance for Trimellitic anhydride sensitization in the workplace, food, and drug hypersensitivity, allergenicity of cyanobacteria, phenotyping/endotyping chronic rhinitis subtypes, chronic cough, progesterone, and seminal plasma hypersensitivity. Dr. Bernstein is a DIA-certified investigator with extensive experience conducting multi-center and physician-initiated clinical therapeutic trials related to asthma, COPD, rhinitis, urticaria, atopic dermatitis, chronic cough, hereditary and ACE-induced angioedema.

Dr. Bernstein is the author of over 300 peer-reviewed articles in addition to numerous book chapters on a variety of relevant topics in Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He is the co-editor of the textbook Clinical Asthma: Theory and Practice, published in 2014, editor of Rhinitis published by Elsevier and Editor in 2016, editor of Rhinitis and Related Upper Respiratory Conditions: A Clinical Guide published by Springer in 2018 and co-editor of the textbook Asthma, COPD and the Overlap syndrome: A case-based overview of similarities and differences published by Taylor and Francis in 2018. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Asthma and is on the editorial board of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and Allergy Asthma Proceedings. He is a prolific reviewer for these journals as well as JACI (editorial board member 2012-2017) and JACI: In Practice.

Dr. Bernstein is on the medical advisory board of the HAEA organization, Vice-Chairman of the AAAAI Foundation (Major gift chair), President of Interasma, and Chairman of AFI.  He is a member of the AAAAI/ACAAI Joint Task Force Practice Parameters. Dr. Bernstein is actively involved with the University of Cincinnati Allergy Fellowship Training Program in the education of fellows and also teaches residents and medical students.   Dr. Bernstein has been voted “Best Doctor” in Cincinnati from 1999 to 2020 and has been ranked by US News and World Report as being in the top 1% of doctors in his specialty.  He is a member of the University of Cincinnati Alpha Omega Alpha chapter.
