John Raphael has been working in the field of pain management for the past 12 years. He splits his time between clinical practice and university research work. He is director of the Regional inpatient Pain Unit at the Dudley Hospitals National Health Service Trust, West Midlands, a nationally renowned treatment centre for Pain, offering cutting edge pain therapies to patients from across the country where other treatments have failed and winner of the 2007 Hospital Doctor award in Pain Management of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

He holds an Honorary Professorship at Birmingham City University, from where he heads up a Masters programme in Pain Studies and serves on the editorial board of pain journals. He has attracted considerable research grants that support doctoral students research programme and he has published many research articles and book chapters.
