Dr. Frangioni is an internationally renowned expert in molecular imaging and image-guided surgery. His R&D laboratory focuses on the development of novel medical devices and disease-specific contrast agents for diagnosing and treating cancer and other diseases. Dr. Frangioni is the inventor of FLARE® intraoperative near-infrared fluorescence imaging systems, which use invisible light to find tumors, blood vessels, lymph nodes, and nerves during surgery. His laboratory has also developed numerous cancer- and disease-specific contrast agents for use with FLARE®. Independent research groups have tested the technology in over 750 patients in 5 countries, where it has been shown to have an enormous potential to improve human surgery.

Dr. Frangioni received his undergraduate degree in Engineering Sciences from Harvard College. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Health Science and Technology (HST) Program, and his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Physiology from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He completed an internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a medical oncology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He has been board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology and was an Attending Physician in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
