John R. Hess MD, MPH, FACP, FAAAS

Dr. John R. Hess, MD, MPH, FACP, FAAAS, is Professor of Pathology and Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He serves as Medical Director of the Cancer Center Laboratory and Associate Medical Director of the Blood Bank. He attended medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle, earned his Masters in Public Health at the University of Hawaii, and is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, medical oncology, blood banking and transfusion medicine, and general preventive medicine and public health. He is the author of 100 papers and book chapters, inventor of the dry fibrin sealant bandage and methods for extending RBC storage, and holder of three U.S. patents. Dr. Hess has served on the committees responsible for blood storage technology for the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the American Association of Blood Banks, and the International Society of Blood Transfusion. He has served as Special Advisor on Blood Safety to the Director General of the World Health Organization and now on the Expert Panel on Blood Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Hess is retired after 25 years of active service in the U.S. Army and U.S. Public Health Service, most recently as Commander of the Blood Research Detachment of Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and had previously served as Director of Health of the Territory of American Samoa.
