Dr John Challis is the former President and CEO of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and is currently University Professor (Emeritus) of Physiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medicine at the University of Toronto and Adjunct Professor at UBC and at the University of Western Australia.
He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, conducted postdoctoral work at UCSD and Harvard Medical School before coming to Canada in 1976. He has served as founding Director of the Lawson Health Research Institute, London, Ontario; Chair of the Department of Physiology and later Vice President Research and Associate Provost of the University of Toronto; and was the first Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health
