John completed his undergraduate training at the University of Texas at El Paso, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. He matriculated to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for medical school, and in 1988, also participated in a summer internship at the NIH working on the development of a rapid diagnostic skin test for people infected with Strongyloides stercoralis, before starting my clinical years. He completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at LBJ Hospital and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston. He finally left Texas and ventured to the northeast, where he completed his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at New England Medical Center (NEMC)/ Tufts Medical School. He continued on staff at NEMC for 6 years before coming to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Over his career, he has focused on the surgical aspect of infertility and reproduction. This includes endometriosis, fibroids, surgical repair of uterine anomalies and scar tissue, and repair of damaged fallopian tubes. He also co-directs the Mass General Integrated Fibroid Program. He has a strong interest in fertility treatment outcomes, reproductive surgery outcomes, environmental factors and reproduction, and diversity in reproductive health care treatments.
