After qualifying in medicine from Glasgow, JP had several training posts in his native city, culminating in his MD thesis in 1997 on the pharmacology and mechanisms of action of the new antiepileptic drugs. He had a six-year spell in Liverpool's Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery training in neurology and clinical neurophysiology. He has been a consultant in Glasgow since 2002, his clinical workload covering established and newly diagnosed epilepsy as well as patients presenting with a first seizure. He has written one textbook and several book chapters including being the lead author for the Neurology chapter in Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine. He is Head of Undergraduate Medicine at Glasgow and a past President of the UK Chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy.
