John Lichtenberger MD

Lt Col John P. Lichtenberger III is a Cardiothoracic Radiologist and Associate Professor of Radiology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. He also serves as director of USU’s pre-clerkship radiology curriculum, developing and coordinating lectures, small groups, and oral exams for medical students. As an Associate Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency and head of cardiac MRI at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he also leads the largest medical 3D Medical Applications Center in the Department of Defense.

Lt Col Lichtenberger grew up in an Air Force family, spending much of his childhood overseas in Korea and Okinawa. After earning his undergraduate degree, he entered a public interest, non-profit fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College. He was then commissioned in 2001 upon entering medical school at USU.

After earning his medical degree in 2005, Lt Col Lichtenberger completed a one-year translational internship, followed by a four-year residency in diagnostic radiology at David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. He went on to complete a one-year fellowship in thoracic and cardiac imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, serving as a clinical instructor in the hospital’s Division of Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging from 2010 to 2011. He later returned to David Grant Medical Center to serve as Chief of Cardiothoracic Imaging and Associate Program Director for Research, before joining USU as a faculty member in 2011, and then as Director of USU’s Integrated Radiology Pre-clerkship Curriculum in 2014.

In 2015, Lt Col Lichtenberger became a faculty member in Thoracic Radiology at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology in Silver Spring, Maryland, and was named Associate Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program for the National Capital Consortium (NCC). In 2016, he was named Director of the NCC’s Research Journal Club and was also selected to serve as Senior Editor for the Cardiovascular and Thoracic section of Rad-Path Dx, an e-learning program.

Lt Col Lichtenberger has written numerous peer-reviewed publications throughout his career, taking a special interest in thoracic neoplasms. Since 2015, he has been serving as a scientific reviewer for several medical journals, and has contributed as an author on several books, most notably “Diagnostic Imaging: Chest 2nd ed.” and “Diagnostic Imaging: Cardiovascular 2nd ed.”
