John Michael Duff graduated from the Royal College Surgeons in Ireland. He continued his training in general surgery as a resident at Johns Hospital Hospital, Baltimore MD, USA, from 1990 to 1992. He then completed a full fellowship program in neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. The United States from 1992 to 1997 with an interest in spinal and cranial surgery. He also completed a 6-month pediatric neurosurgical rotation with Dr. Ian Johnston at Children's Hospital, Sydney, Australia. The training was followed by a skull base surgery fellowship with Dr. Laligam Sekhar at the George Washington Hospital, Washington DC, USA. Dr. Duff then worked for 18 months at the University Hospital of Geneva in collaboration with Professor Nicolas de Tribolet. He then returned to the United States in 2000 and served as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Tufts University, New England Medical Center, and St. Elizabeths Medical Center, Boston MA, USA. He was also Chief of Neurosurgery at St Elizabeths Medical Center from 2002 to 2003. Dr. Duff returned to Switzerland in 2004 at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV). He started his private practice in January 2019 at the Clinique de Genolier

Dr. Duff has a research interest in surgical robotics of the spine, is a co-holder of a patent in robotics, and has joined a team that developed a surgical robot at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland. His main clinical interests are complex cervical spine and craniovertebral junction reconstruction, image-guided intra and extradural spine surgery, and minimally invasive spine surgery.

Dr. Duff is currently chairman of the spinal section of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), and has been a frequent faculty member of EANS, AO Spine, and Eurospine courses. He has been a frequent guest speaker at international surgical meetings. Dr. Duff is a board-certified neurosurgeon in the United States, with European Board Certification in Neurosurgery and FMH Equivalency in Neurosurgery (Swiss Federal Title). He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS).
