Dr. Marek completed his medical school training at the University of Cincinnati in 1988. He then completed his general surgery training at the University of Colorado and his vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Arizona. Dr. Marek then joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico Department of Surgery in 1996. Since that time Dr. Marek has held positions as Associate Program Director, Division Chief of Vascular Surgery at UNM and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, and Vice-Chair of Clinical Affairs for the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Marek accepted the role of Interim Chair of Surgery for UNM in January of 2021. During his career, he has been involved with multiple NIH and multicenter research trials in vascular surgery has coauthored 37 peer-reviewed articles, written 14 book chapters, and made 78 presentations at regional, national, and international meetings. Dr. Marek still maintains an active clinical practice with primary interests in lower extremity ischemia especially related to diabetes and hemodialysis access care.
