Dr. Rinn's laboratory focuses its research on the regulation of the human genome. Outside the laboratory, John Rinn taught and mentored numerous doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars and other related research activities such as grant reviews. Finally, Dr. Rinn has had a continued passion for undergraduate and graduate teaching with the teaching philosophy of understanding basic biological principles, the modern genome applications of these principles, and the questions these new technologies have raised for future research.

Dr. Rinn earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry cum laude and with honors at the University of Minnesota and received recognition for the best senior thesis presentation and research. He completed his doctorate in molecular biophysics and biochemistry (MB&B) at Yale University in the laboratory of Michael Snyder, Ph.D. Dr. Rinn further received the Student Martial Award for "extraordinary service to Yale University Graduate studies". He continued to do his postdoctoral studies at Stanford University with Howard Chang, Ph.D. as a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation fellow.
