John Crane MD, PhD

Dr. John K. Crane is a Professor of Medicine at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo, with adjunct appointments in Microbiology & Immunology and Pharmacology & Toxicology. He also serves as Medical Director of the Erie County Tuberculosis Clinic in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Crane is widely recognized for his contributions to infectious diseases research, particularly in microbial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, and enteric bacterial infections.

Dr. Crane earned both his MD and PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Virginia. He completed his residency training at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia. Throughout his academic career, he has led and collaborated on multiple research initiatives focused on bacterial virulence, host-pathogen interactions, and innovative antimicrobial strategies.

His research interests include enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, tuberculosis, biofilm-associated infections, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and the therapeutic role of zinc and nitric oxide in infectious diseases. His work has been supported through NIH-funded projects and has contributed significantly to advancing understanding of bacterial disease mechanisms and treatment approaches.

In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Crane is actively involved in medical education and mentorship, guiding medical students, residents, and fellows in infectious diseases and translational research.
