John J. Mulvihill MD

Dr. John Mulvihill, MD, a pediatrician, and medical geneticist, was for 20 years chief of Clinical Genetics at the National Cancer Institute and Director of NIH’s Interinstitute Medical Genetics Program. In 1990, he became founder and chair of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1998, he accepted the Talley Chair of Genetics, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Oklahoma. He has directed three genetics residency programs. In 2014, he went part-time (40 percent) on assignment at the National Human Genome Research Institute. A graduate of Holy Cross College, Dartmouth Medical School, and the University of Washington, he was on the house staff at University of Washington Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital. A member of 13 professional societies, he was co-founder and second president of the International Genetic Epidemiology Society.

Dr. John Besides serving on 17 editorial boards, he was co-editor-in-chief of Genetic Epidemiology. In 1989, the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation awarded him its first Recklinghausen Award. Mulvihill’s research focused on the genetics of human cancer. He has had NIH and other national grants for neurofibromatosis, pancreatic cancer, and fetal alcohol syndrome and has written 341 scientific articles and edited 7 monographs and 8 board review course syllabi. Elected a Director of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, he is also on the Committee on Ethics, Law, and Society, the International Human Genome Organisation.
