John Jing-Wei Chen, M.D., Ph.D., is a neuro-ophthalmologist and Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology. He provides care for patients with visual disorders related to neurological causes and works closely with other specialties, including neurology, rheumatology, and neurosurgery.

Dr. Chen completed his MD and PhD at the University of Virginia. He did his Ophthalmology residency and Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship training at the University of Iowa before coming to Mayo Clinic. His clinical and research focus includes optic neuritis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and retinal imaging. He serves as the Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship director. He is an Associate Editor for Ophthalmology and the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology and has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Chen is an active member of the American Board of Ophthalmology, American Ophthalmology Society, and American Eye Study Club. He serves on the Board for the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, was the former President of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, and Chair of the Upper Midwest Neuro-Ophthalmology Group. He has received multiple clinical, educational, and academic awards, including the Real World Ophthalmology Inspiring Academic Leader Award, Best Teacher of the Year in Ophthalmology four times at Mayo Clinic, leading to induction to the Educators Hall of Fame, and was the recipient of the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award.
