Dr. John Medwyn Hutson, MD, DSc, FRACS, FAAP, FCAPS, is the Chair of Paediatric Surgery at the University of Melbourne. Prof. Hutson has spent 25 years with a special interest in the embryology of sexual development and testicular descent, and in recent years has developed special expertise in the management of disorders of the large bowel, including anorectal anomalies, Hirschsprung disease, and slow-transit constipation, He is the author of numerous papers and books for teaching medical students, as well as monographs on testicular descent, kidney and urogenital malformations, anorectal malformations and disorders of sex development.
John was a student at Melbourne Grammar School and then studied medicine at Monash University. He excelled academically early on, earning the Ronald Guy Larkin scholarship and a Commonwealth scholarship. At University he was awarded the Ramsey prize for proficiency in zoology, the David Rosenthal prize for best aggregate mark in the second and third year, the Carnation award in neonatal Pediatrics, and the Harry Hindlip Green scholarship in medicine.
