Dr. Halperin is chair of the Department of Neurosciences at Overlook Medical Center and medical director of the Neurosciences Service Line for Atlantic Health System, with responsibility for neurology and neurosurgery care at all campuses. He is a professor of Neurology and Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Under his leadership, the department has grown substantially, with clinical expertise in a broad range of neurological and neurosurgical subspecialties, and delivers clinical outcomes among the best in the nation.

Dr. Halperin chaired the Department of Neurology at North Shore University Hospital on Long Island prior to joining the Atlantic Health System. While on the neurology faculty at SUNY Stony Brook, he had the opportunity to be involved in early observations of the neurologic manifestations of the then-novel infection known as Lyme disease. Dr. Halperin has made numerous contributions in this field, including serving on CDC advisory panels and on the organizing committees of international meetings; he is a frequent speaker nationally and internationally.

Dr. Halperin served as an examiner for the ABPN Neurology oral board examination for two decades, serves as an ad hoc member of the NINDS Study Section on Clinical Neuroimmunology & Brain Tumors, and has previously been an ad hoc member of the study section on Stroke Clinical Trials. He serves on the Guideline Development Sub-Committee of the American Academy of Neurology and has played major roles in developing multiple practice guidelines. He has published more than 200 chapters and peer-reviewed articles and edited five books. He is on the editorial boards of Neurology and of Current Neurology & Neuroscience Reports, where he serves as the section editor for neuro-infectious diseases. He has served on New Jersey’s Stroke Advisory Panel since its inception in 2007, chairing it since 2015.

Dr. Halperin graduated from MIT (Physics) and Harvard Medical School, trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago, and in Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he subsequently completed a basic research fellowship. He was previously a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and at NYU.
