John E. Tomaszewski MD, MASCP

A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Tomaszewski received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his residency in pathology (1978-82) and fellowship in surgical pathology (1982-83) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and had additional training in renal pathology (1984) at Columbia University in New York City during the first year of his initial appointment.

Dr. Tomaszewski joined the faculty of University of Pennsylvania in 1983 as an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. During his 28-year tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, he rose through the ranks to Professor and served in numerous leadership positions, including Director of Electron Microscopy, Director of Surgical Pathology, Vice Chair Anatomic Pathology-Hospital Services and Interim Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He has just joined the faculty at UB as Professor and Chair of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences.

Dr Tomaszewski’s long-term research interests lie in the fields of genitourinary pathology. In recent years Dr. Tomaszewski’s research interest has focused on the application of quantitative image analysis, computer vision, and machine learning to diagnostic problems in prostate and other cancers. He sees the field of “integrated diagnostics” with the fusion of large quantitative high resolution imaging and molecular data sets as the paradigm for the new 21st century diagnostics.
