John Lothes academic career began in January 2005, as a faculty member at James Sprunt Community College. In August 2005, he returned to UNCW, where he earned his Master’s degree, to teach in the Psychology department. In 2012, Dr. Lothes joined the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences as an adjunct PED 101 faculty member, bringing with him a specialization in martial arts training and research background in mindfulness. Currently, Dr. Lothes holds the rank of Sandan (third-degree black belt) in Aikido and is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. As a PED 101 instructor, John has taught self-defense, Aikido, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and Functional Fitness classes.

Dr. Lothes earned his BA in Psychology from Shepherd University in 2000. After working for the West Virginia Children's Home Society, he decided to continue his education in the mental health field and in 2004 earned his master's degree in clinical psychology at UNCW. In 2017, Dr. Lothes earned his doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from UNCW's Watson School of Education.
