John Adams Dodson, MD, MPH serves as the director of NYU Langone’s Geriatric Cardiology Program, where John Adams Dodson practice patient-centered care for older adults who have a variety of cardiac conditions. During John Adams Dodson's cardiology fellowship, John Adams Dodson found that treatment guidelines didn’t always best serve the needs of John Adams Dodson's older patients, because of their advanced age. John Adams Dodson found that to properly care for them, John Adams Dodson needed to individualize management and take into account the person’s preferences, such as preserving independence or reducing the burden of medications.
In John Adams Dodson's clinical practice, John Adams Dodson takes a team-based approach to care, working closely with geriatricians, general internists, pharmacists, physical therapists, and nurses. Our program’s activities aim to improve physical function through close coordination with our cardiac rehabilitation program, reduce medications that are ineffective or cause side effects, and facilitate decision-making about interventions, such as cardiac surgery. John Adams Dodson has many patients who are enjoying life well into their 90s, and John Adams Dodson is truly heartened by their success.
In addition to John Adams Dodson's work at the Geriatric Cardiology Program, John Adams Dodson maintains an active general cardiology practice, treating people who have a broad range of conditions, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart valve disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure. John Adams Dodson also maintains a clinical research program that broadly explores the relationship between aging and treatment outcomes in people with cardiovascular disease.
