Dr. John Matthews is the medical director of the Bulfinch Program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and assistant professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He received his master of science degree in neurophysiology from the University of Michigan, and his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California in 1975.

Dr. Matthews completed his internship and residency training at the University of Michigan Medical Center from 1976-1980. He became a research fellow at the same university from 1980-1983 and pursued research in the area of beta-endorphin regulation in major depressive disorder. Prior to accepting a position at MGH’s inpatient psychiatry department in 1994, he was the associate medical director and director of the Mood Disorders Program at Pembroke Hospital. He was medical director of Inpatient Psychiatry at MGH from 1998-2004 and director of Inpatient Research and Training from 2004-2012.

Dr. Matthews has received numerous awards for excellence in patient care from the National Alliance for the Mentally, Manic Depressive and Depression Association, Massachusetts Medical Society, and, most recently, the MGH “Excellence in Action” award, nomination for the McGovern Clinical Excellence Award, and the American Psychiatric Association Lifetime Distinguished Fellow award.
