John C Byrd, MD, is the D. Warren Brown Chair of Leukemia Research; a professor of medicine, medicinal chemistry, and veterinary biosciences; and Senior Advisor for Cancer Experimental Therapeutics at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. He is a board certified hematologist whose clinical practice focuses on caring for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). With the goal of eradicating the need for chemotherapy in the treatment of leukemia, Dr Byrd leads clinical trials on new classes of drugs and novel agents. As a consequence of his detailed laboratory and clinical work, therapeutic agents such as rituximab, alemtuzumab, idelalisib, ibrutinib, and acalabrutinib have been identified as effective agents against CLL.

Recently, he has become involved in the development of new therapeutics for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr Byrd attended Hendrix College in Conway, AR, where he received a bachelor’s degree with distinction in chemistry. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. After medical school, he completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and a postdoctoral translational laboratory fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.
