John Bischof is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Departments of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering and the inaugural Carl and Janet Kuhrmeyer Chair in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He obtained a B.S. in Bioengineering from U.C. Berkeley (UCB) in 1987, an M.S. from UCB and U.C. San Francisco in 1989, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from UCB in 1992. After a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Harvard in the Center for Engineering in Medicine he joined the University of Minnesota in 1993.

Professor Bischof has an H-index of 38 by Scopus and over 40 by Google scholar and is an author on over 130 peer reviewed journal publications. He has 7 patents filed or issued and numerous fellowships and research awards for his work in bioheat and mass transfer particularly in the fields of cryobiology and cryosurgery. These include the prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Van Mow bioengineering medal and the George Taylor Research Award of the University of Minnesota. He is an elected Fellow of the Society for Cryobiology, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Professor Bischof has performed service as the President of the Society for Cryobiology from 2004 – 2005, Chair of the Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) from 2011 – 2012. He has been active in many other scientific groups including: American College of Cryosurgery (Executive Committee), ASME NanoEngineering Council (Executive Committee), NanoEngineering in Medicine and Biology Meeting Program Chair and Conference Chair (2014 and 2015), and the International Society for Heat and Mass Transfer (Scientific Council). He also has membership in and performs major service for the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and the Society for Thermal Medicine. Lastly, he sits on several Scientific Advisory Boards which include(d): Cryo-Cath Medtronic (Montreal), DenervX (Minneapolis), BioGenics (Napa) and has recently started a company with colleagues entitled: Vigilant Diagnostics.
