Professor Sir John Burn was awarded a first class honours degree in Human Genetics by Newcastle University during his medical training. He completed training at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. He became the first consultant clinical geneticist in North East England in 1984 and leader of the Northern Genetics Service, caring for the three million people of the North East and Cumbria. Professor of Clinical Genetics in 1991. By 2010, the research Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) had 33 team leaders.
