Dr. John D. Berne, MD, MPH, FACS, is a trauma and critical care surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Nova Southeastern University. He serves as Associate Trauma Director at Broward Health Medical Center and Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program, where he plays a central role in surgical education, trauma system leadership, and resident mentorship.

Dr. Berne has been a practicing Trauma/Critical Care Surgeon at Broward Health for over a decade, contributing to the advancement of high-acuity surgical care across the Miami–Fort Lauderdale region. In his leadership roles, he has helped strengthen trauma program infrastructure, support surgical quality initiatives, and guide the development of future surgeons through structured residency training.

He earned his Master of Public Health in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from the University of South Florida, further enhancing his expertise in outcomes research and evidence-based practice. Dr. Berne received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Southern California and holds a Master of Science in Physiology & Biophysics from Georgetown University. He completed his undergraduate studies in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, Berkeley.
