John A. Wilson was born in Sharon Pennsylvania on May 16, 1959. After graduating from Hickory High School in Hermitage Pennsylvania in 1977, he was accepted into the Penn State /Jefferson combined Premed Medical School program. After receiving his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1982, Dr Wilson served a surgical internship and residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. In 1990 he completed his neurosurgical training at Tufts New England Medical Center under Dr William Shucart. Following this, he did a fellowship at the Paracelsus Clinic in Osnabruck, Germany.

Dr Wilson began neurosurgical practice in Pittsburgh at Allegheny General Hospital. In 1993 he was recruited to the neurosurgical faculty at Wake Forest University School of medicine in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Since then he has practised neurosurgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina where he is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Neurological Surgery as well as the Residency Program Director. His practice focuses primarily on cerebrovascular and skull base disorders.

Dr Wilson serves on the AANS/CNS Coding and Reimbursement Committee and is Chair of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies Coding and Reimbursement Committee. He serves as the AANS Advisor to the AMA Relative Value Update Committee. He has served as an advisor to the North Carolina state Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee and the national Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. Dr Wilson has held offices in a number of national and regional societies including President of the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society, President of the Southern Neurosurgical Society, President of the Society of University Neurosurgeons, and Chair of the joint American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Cerebrovascular Section.
