Johannes Buchner investigates the principles of protein structure formation and the cellular machinery of protein folding, which also allows the cell to survive adverse environmental conditions (such as high temperatures). In addition to providing insight into fundamental cellular processes, these studies also provide important prerequisites for the production of proteins in biotechnological processes, such as the biosynthesis of antibodies, whose molecular basis is being elucidated.
After studying biology at the University of Regensburg, Prof. Buchner received his doctorate there in 1991. As a postdoctoral researcher, he worked with Ira Pastan at the National Cancer Institute of the NIH on new concepts of cancer therapy and subsequently returned to the University of Regensburg as head of a junior research group. There he habilitated in biochemistry in 1995 and was appointed full professor at TUM in 1998. Prof. Buchner was co-organizer and co-spokesperson of the Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPSM) cluster of excellence and he has led the SFB 1035 on conformational regulation of proteins since 2012).
