Dr. Johann Böhm completed his studies at the Georg August University in Göttingen in 2003 and then did his doctoral thesis at the Institute for Human Genetics at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg. Since then he has been a research fellow at the Institute for Translational Medicine and Neurogenetics, IGBMC in Strasbourg, which is headed by Jocelyn Laporte.

Johann's scientific interest lies in the discovery and research of new genes that are responsible for neuromuscular diseases with the aim of improving genetic counseling and identifying possible therapeutic approaches. He has already discovered several genes that are responsible for myopathies in both humans and dogs. The discovery and characterization of the MTM1 lab paved the way for the recently published successful gene therapy in dogs.
