Johan W. Mouton received degrees in biology (MSc 1983) as well as medicine (MD 1988) at the University of Utrecht. He completed his PhD at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) in 1993 and his training as a consultant medical microbiologist in 1994. He was a consultant medical microbiologist at the University Hospital Dijkzigt and the Sophia's Children's Hospital in Rotterdam until 1997 and then moved to the Regional Public Health Laboratory located at the Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital in Nijmegen. In 2010 he moved to the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre where he was head of the section bacteriology at the department of medical microbiology and is a Professor in Pharmaocokinetics and Pharmacodynamics. At present he is also Unit head at the deparment of microbiology and infectious diseases at the ErasmusMC in Rotteram.

His main research interest is optimization of antimicrobial therapy and preventing resistance emergence through application of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. In that area, he has (co)-authored over 200 scientific publications and book chapters, editor of several textbooks and delivered numerous (invited) lectures. He was awarded fellowship of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 2010. From 2002-2004 he was president of the International Society Anti-infective Pharmacology (ISAP) and in 2010 one of the founding members and present secretary of the ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) Pharmacology of Antimicrobials Study Group (EPASG). He is present secretary of the Dutch Working Party on Antibiotic Policy, member of the expert panel of the Netherlands Veterinary Medicines Authority and also a steering committee member of the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST).
