Joel J. Heidelbaugh MD, FAAFP, FACG

Dr. Joel J. Heidelbaugh received his medical degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University and completed his family medicine residency at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, also in Syracuse, New York. He is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP), and is the first family physician to receive the designation of Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) for his research contributions to the field.

Dr. Heidelbaugh sees patients at the Ypsilanti Health Center and attends on the Department of Family Medicine's inpatient adult medicine at the University of Michigan Hospital. His clinical interests include preventive health screening for men, women, and children of all ages; chronic disease management; disorders of the gastrointestinal system; and men’s health and urologic conditions. Dr. Heidelbaugh's practice encompasses patients of all ages, spanning a wide spectrum of both medical and psychosocial disease states.

Dr. Heidelbaugh is a co-author of guidelines for the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and American Urological Association (AUA). He is a past president of the American Society for Men’s Health (ASMH) and has an appointment in the Department of Urology. He currently serves as the primary care lead for the Rome Foundation, the organization that creates scientific data and educational information to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders of gut-brain interaction. He has authored over 120 manuscripts and book chapters, has edited over 20 textbooks, and has created the first evidence-based textbook on men’s health, Clinical Men’s Health: Evidence in Practice.
