Joanne L. Tipper BSc, PhD

Joanne studied for a degree in Biotechnology in 1990, which was followed by a PhD in skin microbiology in 1994, both at the University of Leeds. Following this Joanne's first postdoctoral research fellow investigated the relationship between Burkholderia Cepacia complex, an organism associated with poor prognosis in Cystic Fibrosis patients, and lung epithelial cells.
Professor Tipper moved into the multidisciplinary research field of medical engineering in the mid 1990’s after completing a PhD in skin microbiology. Over the last 20 years she has been responsible for developing methodologies for isolating wear particles generated by total joint replacements from both periprosthetic tissues and simulator lubricants.
