Dr. Zhou received a B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1984 and an M.S. degree in Environmental Science/Nutrition in 1987 from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China, and a Ph.D. degree in Nutritional Sciences in 1994 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Dr. Zhou received postdoctoral training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School from 1994-1996 and a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health 1996-1999. Dr. Zhou has been appointed as an Instructor (1996), an Assistant Professor (2000), and an Associate Professor (2010) in the Department of Surgery, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Zhou has been the Director of Nutrition/Metabolism Laboratory at the Department of Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center since 1998.

Dr. Zhou’s research has been widely supported by several funding organizations. Since 1996, he has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on 30 grants from different scientific funding agencies and industry from local, national, and international resources, such as the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, American Institute for Cancer Research, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation and Nichimo Company in Japan. Dr. Zhou has published about 60 peer-reviewed original research papers, review papers, and book chapters/editorials.

Dr. Zhou has been the member/ad hoc member in 20 study sections and special emphasis panels in the NIH since 2001. He has also served the grant review panels for USDA, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and the James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program, and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program review panel in Florida Department of Public Health. Dr. Zhou has also been invited as the Foreign Reviewer for the Italian Association for Cancer Research, Singapore National Medical Research Council, and National Science Foundation of China. Dr. Zhou has served as the reviewer for 28 scientific journals, the Guest Editor for the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Managing Editor for Frontiers in Biosciences, and the Editorial Board for Clinical Medicine: Endocrinology and Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolism Insights, and Chinese Journal of Surgical Oncology.
