Prof. Jian-Jiang Zhong was born in April of 1965 in Zhejiang Province, China. He obtained his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from East China University of Science & Technology (ECUST, Shanghai; formerly: East China Institute of Chemical Technology) in July 1986, and Master and Ph.D. degrees in Fermentation Technology/Biotechnology from Osaka University (Osaka, Japan) in March 1990 and March 1993, respectively. In April 1993, Dr. Zhong returned to ECUST and was promoted to full professor in November 1996. He was the Director of State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering (China) at ECUST during 1998-2006 as appointed by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE).

Professor Jian-Jiang Zhong is the founder and head of the Laboratory of Molecular Biochemical Engineering & Advanced Fermentation Technology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He joined SJTU in Sept. 2006, and now is a PI of the State Key Lab. of Microbial Metabolism and the School of Life Sciences & Biotechnology. Dr. Zhong was awarded the Cheung Kong Scholar Professorship by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 1999 and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars by NSFC in 2002. He is on the executive board of Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFoB) and the advisory board of the Society for Biological Engineering (AIChE, USA). He is on the editorial board of 9 SCI journals: Editor-in-Chief of Process Biochemistry (Elsevier; since Jan. 2005) and Biotechnology & Applied Biochemistry (IUBMB & Wiley; since Jan. 2012); Associate Editor of Biotechnology & Bioengineering (Wiley) and Bioprocess & Biosystems Engineering (Springer); and EBM of Biochemical Engineering Journal (Elsevier), Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology (Springer), Enzyme and Microbial Technology (Elsevier), Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering (Japan & Elsevier), and Engineering in Life Sciences (Wiley-VCH).
