Jesús L. Romalde is a full professor at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). He was born at Ferrol (Galicia, NW Spain) in 1964, finished school at Institute Concepción Arenal (1981), studied Biology at Universidade of Santiago de Compostela (1987), obtained a PhD in Biology at the same institution (1992), and completed postdoctoral work as a Spanish Ministry Fellow at Baylor College of Medicine (USA)(1994).

Prof. Ronald began his research career in the 1980s at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, working on bacterial fish pathogens, specifically Yersinia ruckeri, studying different aspects including characterization, epidemiology, and virulence mechanisms. During this period he performed several research placements in international institutions, including the University of Guelph (Canada) and the Pasteur Institute (Paris, France).

Since 1994, when he obtained an associate professor at the Universidade of Santiago de Compostela, he continued to work on bacterial fish and shellfish pathogens, with a special interest in the description of new taxa with pathogenic potential for marine organisms. Simultaneously he founded the enteric viruses laboratory focused on the detection, transmission, and epidemiology of enteric viruses, including hepatitis A virus and norovirus.

Prof. Ronald has been involved in research in microbiology of aquatic organisms for more than 25 years, he has participated in 38 R&D projects financed by public calls (national and European) and presented lectures at international meetings. He has directed 12 Ph.D. theses. Between 2012 and 2014, he held the position of Vice-rector for Degrees and Teaching and Research Staff of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain).
