Jeroen Schouten studied at the University of Leuven, attended the Internal Medicine course at the Radboud University Nijmegen and the Intensive Care course at the University College of London Hospital in the United Kingdom. He obtained his doctorate at Radboud University in Infectious Diseases and Implementation Science. After his training he became Internist-intensivist and Medical Safety Officer at Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital in Nijmegen. He is a senior researcher at IQ healthcare, a research institute on quality of care at the Radboud UMC.

His research interests concern Antibiotic Stewardship, in particular the Intensive Care. He is closely involved with the Dutch Antibiotic Stewardship program and is treasurer of ESGAP (European Study Group for Antibiotic Stewardship).
