Dr. Avner is the Chairman of Pediatrics at the Maimonides Children's Hospital in Brooklyn. He is also a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical School. Dr. Avner graduated from Johns Hopkins University, Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons with induction into Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his pediatric residency and then a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1990. He is one of the first pediatricians in the country Board Certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Avner has been a member of many national committees related to Pediatric Emergency Medicine including the Emergency Medicine Section Executive Committee of the AAP, editor of the section newsletter, contributing editor for AAP Grand Rounds, and chairman of the subcommittee for Emergency Medicine Resident Trainees Fellowship Curriculum. He has been the program chairperson for the AAP Emergency Medicine section meeting for several years, the course director for a national review course for Pediatric Emergency Medicine as well as an editor for an AAP online self-assessment for Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Avner has also received numerous awards for excellence in both medical student and resident teaching. Dr. Avner is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric emergencies and has published 200 original studies, review articles, chapters, and abstracts on a variety of topics, but his specific interest is the management of febrile children. His work on febrile infants has been published in Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Care, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, and The New England Journal of Medicine.
