Dr. Jeffrey Mark Drazen is the chief of the Division of Medical Communications and a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). He is also the Distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS).
He received his medical degree from HMS and completed two residency programs in internal medicine at BWH (formerly known as Peter Bent Brigham Hospital). He then completed a fellowship in physiology at Harvard School of Public Health. He is board certified in critical care medicine, internal medicine, and pulmonary medicine.
Dr. Drazen’s research has had a profound influence on the treatment of asthma, leading to the creation of four pharmaceuticals for asthma that are currently used by more than 5 million people worldwide. He is currently studying the pro-inflammatory effect of airway constriction in asthma patients. He has authored over 600 peer-reviewed publications, has edited six books, and has worked with the National Institutes of Health in a variety of capacities, including its Pulmonary Disease Council and the Lung and Blood Institute Advisory Council.
Beyond his numerous research contributions to the field of pulmonary medicine, Dr. Drazen serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, co-chairs the Institute of Medicine’s Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation, and is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Institute of Medicine, the Inter-Urban Clinical Club and the Association of American Physicians. He is also a member of the World Health Organization’s Scientific Advisory Group on Clinical Trials Registration.
