Jed A. Hartings PhD

Dr. Jed A. Hartings, PhD, is a neuroscientist who trained at the University of Pittsburgh and served eight years as a Medical Service Corps officer in the U.S. Army before joining the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Cincinnati. His research is focused on acute brain pathology following stroke or neurotrauma, and improved methods for diagnosis and monitoring of the injured brain.

He specializes in the study of pathologic brain waves known as spreading depolarizations, or brain tsunamis. With colleagues in the Co-Operative Studies on Brain Injury Depolarizations (www.cosbid.org), Dr. Hartings has shown that brain tsunamis are the primary mechanism of brain tissue death and occur commonly in the human brain after acute injury. Ongoing research is aimed at improving the diagnosis of these waves, developing treatments, and understanding basic properties and mechanisms.

Dr. Hartings is also Founder and Board President of Cincinnati Classical Academy, a classical charter school and Hillsdale College K-12 Member School. Cincy Classical opened in 2022 and now has 900+ students enrolled from 60 zip codes and 35 school districts. It is currently K-9, but will add a grade each year until K-12 is served. It is the only tuition-free classical school in greater Cincinnati.
