Maroun graduated from St. Joseph’s University, Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his training in Internal Medicine in England where he obtained the M.R.C.P. (UK) in 1973. He specialized in Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and in the Department of Developmental Therapeutics at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, USA.

Dr. Maroun is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and was nominated Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, England in 1997. Until June 2002 Dr. Maroun was chair of Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa and Head of Medical Oncology at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and Ottawa Hospital.

Dr. Maroun was chair of the Ontario Provincial Gastro-Intestinal Practice Guidelines Committee. He is a past President of the Canadian Oncology Societies and the Canadian Association of Medical Oncologists. Dr. Maroun has long experience in the management of GI malignancies and has been involved in clinical research into new drugs development and new combinations in the treatment of colorectal cancer.
