Professor Klastersky served as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels and Professor of Medicine at the University Libre de Bruxelles since 1977. Upon his retirement in April 2005, he was appointed Coordinator of the "Oncology Care Program" of the hospitals of the IRIS network in Brussels and consultant in medical oncology at the Jules Bordet Institute. He is also appointed Vice-President of the Commission of Accreditation in Medical Oncology.

Professor Klastersky was an intern and then an assistant at the University Hospitals of the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1962 to 1965. From 1967 to 1968, he was Chief Resident at the Boston City Hospital and then "Research Fellow" and Medical Assistant at the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory, Harvard Medical School.

He became Chief of the Microbiology Sector of the Department of Medicine of the Institut Jules Bordet in 1970, before taking the position of Head of the Medical Service from 1977 to 2005. Professor Klastersky was the founding member of the "European Lung Cancer Working". Party "and was the President from 1978 to 2003.
