Jean-Francois Payen since January 1, 2011, has been the head of the Anesthesia-Resuscitation center at the CHU Grenoble Alpes. This division has a staff of 580 people, including 70 anesthetist-resuscitators. He coordinates the care activity in the 3 intensive care units of the CHU Grenoble Alpes (42 beds, 2,500 admissions per year) and in the anesthesia department (31,000 anesthesia acts per year, 26,000 consultations). His mission is in particular to promote the university activity of the discipline (clinical research, initial and continuous training), to ensure compliance with the clinical missions of the discipline, and to optimize the medico-economic management of the pole. He practices his clinical part in neuroresuscitation. Furthermore, he alone of 4 national consultants for anesthetic malignant hyperthermia susceptibility screening.
He is also pursuing a preclinical research activity as head of the "experimental neurotraumatology" theme, within team 5 of INSERM U836, Grenoble Institut des Neurosciences (GIN). This theme was set up in 2002, upon his return from a sabbatical year in the laboratory of Professor Peter van Zijl (Division of MR Research, Department of Radiology, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA) (2000-2001). They are one of the few European laboratories to work on head trauma according to a model close to clinical reality, to follow the immediate evolution thereby brain imaging techniques (quantitative BOLD), and to determine the neuroprotective mechanisms induced by certain medications.
