Biography :

Dr. Javed Butler MD, MPH was named by Dr. Vincent Yang, Simons Chair in Internal Medicine at Stony Brook University, as the next Chief of the Cardiology Division effective September 1st, 2014. Dr. Butler is currently Professor of Medicine and Director of Heart Failure Research at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Butler completed his undergraduate medical training at the prestigious Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He then completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Yale University where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. He followed this up with a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Vanderbilt University. He also supplemented his training with advanced fellowships in heart failure/transplant at Vanderbilt University and cardiac imaging training at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He served on faculty initially at Vanderbilt University as the Director of the Heart and Heart/Lung transplant programs prior to moving to Emory University. He has been a preeminent researcher and has been involved in several multi-center landmark trials within the field of congestive heart failure. He has served on the editorial committees of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Journal, Heart Failure Clinics, and Congestive Heart Failure. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Heart Failure Society of America.

Dr. Butler has conduced research on disease progression, outcomes, and determination of prognosis in patients with congestive heart failure. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications in his career and receives funding from national and international sources. Clinically, he has been involved in the comprehensive managements of patients with advanced cardiomyopathies, including those who have received or are candidates for left ventricular assist devices and heart transplants.

Dr. Butler is the chief of cardiology and co-director of the heart institute at the Stony Brook University. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, advanced heart failure and transplant medicine. Prior to joining Stony Brook, he was professor of medicine at the Emory University. Dr. Butler has published over 350 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Butler is the recipient of the Simon Dack Award by the American College of Cardiology and the Time, Feeling, and Focus award by the American Heart Association. He has been cited in America’s Best Doctors numerous times.

He serves on the ACC/AHA heart failure guidelines committee, on several NIH study sections, chairs the NIH heart failure network’s ancillary studies committee; and he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Heart Failure Society of America. He serves on the editorial board of several peer reviewed cardiovascular journals. He also serves as the Deputy Chief Science Officer for the American Heart Association.

After completing his residency at Yale, he completed a cardiology fellowship and advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship at Vanderbilt, and cardiac imaging fellowship from the Massachusetts General Hospital. Prior to joining Emory, he served as the director of the cardiac and heart-lung transplant programs at Vanderbilt. He has completed Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard University and Masters in Business Administration from Emory University.
